Presqu’ile Provincial Park is home to one of three radio sites on the north shore of Lake Ontario, positioned on a long peninsula jutting out into the lake like a boot. Near the very center of the northern shore, Presqu’ile, just outside Brighton, is in the best position to hear the best of everything along the shore and beyond, and this is much the case in reality.
Presqu’ile Provincial Park is just 55 miles directly across the water from Rochester, whereas Buffalo is 90 miles to the southwest and Syracuse 100 miles to the southeast. On the north shore of the lake, Toronto is 80 miles to the west and Kingston 65 miles to the east. Of local signals, Peterborough and Belleville are both within 35 miles, and these signals are more spread out, making Presqu’ile an ideal location from which to listen.

Recommendations for this radio site: Presqu’ile is a fine option for overnight camping, because like most Ontario provincial-owned parks, day use fees can be expensive and the camping is certainly worthwhile here. The park itself is expansive, based on a peninsula with an old lighthouse at its point, numerous hiking and boardwalk trails, an interesting nature center full of exhibits, a beach, and a few different sections of campgrounds. Just the drive from the park entrance to the lighthouse is more than 4 miles in total with plenty between.
Presqu’ile is nearby a number of different services and tourist destinations. Downtown Brighton is only four miles away with limited services and Trenton is another eight miles from there, with additional services and a quaint downtown worth exploring, not to mention the Canadian Forces Air Force base just outside of town. Belleville, further to the east, is also worth the time to explore, while about 30 minutes in the opposite direction, downtown Cobourg is equally fascinating and has a great marina and beach, all of which are a must-visit. On the way, don’t forget to visit The Big Apple in Colborne, just 10 miles from the park (exit 497, right beside the 401). It’s not just a shop and restaurant, but home to the world’s biggest apple, a free roadside tourist attraction that is 40 feet (12 m.) tall, which you really can’t miss as you drive by. Sandbanks Provincial Park, part of the Prince Edward County tourist area (often referred to as “The County”), is a popular option near Presqu’ile and was the original destination for this project. However, the park is popular and can be entirely booked for the whole summer, as was luckily my case. Furthermore, the shoreline there is oriented toward Buffalo, meaning signals to the east are likely to be weakened or blocked, whereas this is not an issue at Presqu’ile.
Location rating: Because of its central position on Lake Ontario and its location on a peninsula jutting into the lake, Presqu’ile is automatically a spot to consider. Furthermore, it is close to services, has ample opportunities to explore within the park boundaries, is close to a large number of tourist attractions – the large majority of them free of charge – and is a great alternative to nearby popular Sandbanks. This location is both close enough to major markets across the water and far enough away from all of them so that no stations overwhelmingly interfere with reception. The opportunity to hear New York translators is overwhelming, with 14 of them heard at this one location, some of them approaching or in excess of 100 miles. This park is large enough where it is possible to pick multiple locations to set up in and hear different signals from all of them. While it is still Lake Ontario, home to plenty of major urban centers that have an often overbearing variety of local stations to deal with, it doesn’t get much better than this on the north shore.
